Running back Tariq Sims provided some of the highlights on a sunny Saturday afternoon as Old Dominion closed its spring practice period with the 55th annual Charity Bowl Spring Game at S.B. Ballard Stadium.

The Monarchs were in public competition for the first time since completing their 6-7 season in 2023.

Sims ran for several big gains, including a 40-yarder and then a 35-yard touchdown.

Incumbent starting quarterback Grant Wilson added a 25-yard run and threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Diante Vines, a transfer from Iowa. Isiah Paige and Aaron Young caught first-down throws from Wilson.

Later in the game, Colton Joseph completed a 35-yard pass down the right sideline to Dominic Dutton.

Defensive highlights included sacks by Amorie Morrison and Koa Naotala, Will Jones II’s interception return for a touchdown and Khiandre Harris’ interception in the end zone.

The final play of the game provided a feel-good moment as 9-year-old Ashton Donley scored a 9-yard “touchdown.” Donley, who has autism, is in the Eliza Hope Foundation’s program.

The Chartway Promise Foundation, the charitable arm of Chartway Credit Union, awarded $1 million in grants this year to charity partners, including the Eliza Hope Foundation.

The Monarchs will open their season Aug. 31 at South Carolina and will play their home opener Sept. 7 against East Carolina.
